The Effects on Humans & Environment From Tsunamis

 Information!!
A tsunami can be generated when destructive tectonic plates abruptly move and push the overlying water up and creates a wave. Tsunamis travel over thousands of kilometers long. Tsunamis only have a small wave height at sea so they normally travel unnoticed. They can travel at over 800 kph and can slow down to about 80 kph in shallow water. The wave is 200km long and gets to about 20km long in shallow water.

Affects
The thing that gets most affected by Tsunami's are Humans and the Environment. When a tsunami hits, hundreds of people die and it completely wrecks the environment. It affects the environment by ripping out the plants and wrecks the soil by drowning it and making it very soft. Most humans get severely injured or die by getting drowned, sharp objects cut them and running into hard things.

Scale

The scale scientists use is the Magnitude Scale. The scale measures the magnitude of the tsunami.1-2 destroys the inside of houses close to the ocean. 2-3 can push over street signs and wreck most house fairly close to the ocean. 3-4 can kill people and completely destroys houses close to the water and can wreck boats in their docks. 4-5 Will effect all houses that are at sea level and and a bit over. 5-6 will destroy cars push boats into buildings and damage most houses. 6-7 will destroy most poorly designed houses and moves cars. 7-8 destroys trees, shrubs, houses and some people. 8-9 kills hundreds of people destroys the environment and houses. 9-10 completely destroys most things and kills hundreds and hundreds of people and completely wrecks the environment. Scientists find that the only problem is that it is hard to measure the potential energy.

Warnings and Predictions
Drawbacks (when the water gets sucked it to the sea) can be a simple warning. If you realize that there are draw backs your main chance of survival would be to run, drive, ride to any source of higher land. A tsunami can not be perfectly predicted- even if the right magnitude happens in the right location.

Samoan Tsunami
The Samoan Tsunami happened 30th of September 2009. Over 120 people died and many more are still being found. The wave was 16 foot high (5m) and crashed over small village homes. The 8.3 Magnitude quake struck on Tuesday. It was 33km deep under water and 190km out to sea.

Interesting Facts
About 80% of Tsunami's occur in the Pacific Ocean.
Over 1000 tsunamis a year.
The tallest tsunami is 300 meters high
